Guiding Question: How might I understand the role of music in Greek society though fusing historical and modern Greek music styles in an original piece?
Background
Music as we know it hails from Ancient Greece. The scales, modes, and ratios that characterize Western Music we listen to come from this musical supergiant. But eastern influences have changed contemporary Greek music to become miles away from what it once was. In this module, I will be exploring the intersections of Ancient Greek Lyrical poetry, Contemporary Laiko Pop, Rebetika, EDM and the burgeoning Hip Hop scene in Athens. Through interviews, mentorships, and lessons from Greek musicians I will learn about how these key music styles have shaped Greek daily life and the sonic characteristics that make them so popular in Greece. My summative will be creating an original piece that the different styles and eras of Greek musical history I explored.
